Way Back When

Posted in Wright Project: Kitchen/Attic Remodel by morticiafright on July 5, 2009

When we first saw what’s now our house, I didn’t want to make an offer because of the kitchen. The kitchen took me back to the 1970s, when I was a Brownie and the leader of my troop was married to a builder. And the kitchen of our-house-to-be had a kitchen that seemed like what a 1970s builder would come up with – well-made cabinets, a backsplash made from tiles that were originally on the floor of Congress, and an unforgettable color combination. I know it’s unforgettable, because someone who hadn’t seen it in a decade said, when she heard we were remodeling, “Do you still have those blue countertops?”
I hope they didn’t damage her retinas back when she visited.

See that mesh in the lower cabinets? More later.

Not enough tiles, I guess, so more blue laminate

Anyway, I hated the kitchen. It wasn’t the first kitchen I’d hated, but previously, I’d hated other people’s recent remodels. Hating an outdated kitchen was something new for me. George reminded me that I’d said I’d rather remodel a kitchen than live with someone else’s choices. Well, yeah, but how could we just get rid of those antique tiles? He insisted that we could find someone who would love them, and that was that. We bought the house, and a mere 11.5 years later, here we are remodeling.

No one will ever accuse us of undue haste.
The other problem with the house was the master suite. Our house is a colonial that was built in the 1920s. About 15 years later, someone added a shed dormer and turned the attic into living space. Over the years, various people — who no doubt had the best intentions – added bargain off-white wall-to-wall carpet, an array of closets that managed to provide very little storage, and a bathroom with vinyl wallpaper and peel-and-stick tile. It was all very beige and not at all functional.

Wow. It’s just as vivid as I remember. How are *your* retinas not scarred from living with it for so many years? Also, I would probably have to suck it in big time to get into that bathroom. Even then, I’d probably have to skootch in sideways. Because I haven’t figured out how to suck in my hips.

“Vivid.” That’s a nice way to put it.

As I looked ahead to our golden years, I couldn’t figure out how we’d get a walker past that vanity. Although if the bathroom floor collapsed into the bathroom below, that would rearrange some space.

You crazy, impetuous kids. You may be rushing into this, but it is exciting.

Can’t wait to see the after pictures.

So how long are you out of the house for? Do the boys like the excitement of a temporary new place?

We’re moving back in the first week of September. Will we have a working kitchen and master suite? Who knows?

The boys love the apartment. They love taking the stairs rather than the elevator, although even that is not enough to wear them out by bedtime. And three boys in one bedroom is very, very exciting. And bouncy. And loud.

I have been assured that the soundproofing is preventing us from annoying our neighbors. Oh, how I hope so.

I just came back to see all the updates – so very exciting! Sorry about the lowered ceiling and the lost window trim :( We are taking on our own very oh-so-small remodel in mid-August. It was a “well we’ve been talking about this for two years but now Shadow-Cat decided in his angst over us being gone for two weeks to make it definite” kind of decision.

We’ll be getting hardwoods (yeah!) on the whole second floor and the stairs going up there. The good thing is because we’re going pre-finished wood they movers will come one Saturday, the flooring people will start Monday and finish Friday, and the movers will move us back in next Monday. In the interim we’ll be still living here all “camping out” up in the attic. Fun fun fun!
